The King's Speech

By Miss Kubelik

It's really tough to find a picture of Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten-Windsor that doesn't make him look like a goofball. As he ages, his ears keep getting bigger, his forehead grows taller, and his eyes seem to move closer together. Didn't we once tell you faithful readers that, back when we were kittens, Charles as Prince of Wales was considered hot? Egad! Those days are well past.

Still and all, goofball or no, the now-King knew he had one job to do today, and he did it well. Smoothly switching between English and French, he used the first Canadian Throne Speech by a reigning monarch since 1977 to basically tell Benedict Donald and his MAGA minions to take a hike (or, if you prefer, faire un randonée).

It wasn't just what the speech, which was written on the advice of the Liberal government, said. What was more important was by whom it was read. Charles sat on a fairly modest, Canadian-type throne* and reaffirmed Canada's existence as a (tap on the blackboard here) fully sovereign nation that could seize a unique chance to lead the world. (After all, the US has clearly lost its marbles.) "This moment is...an incredible opportunity," Charles said. "An opportunity to think big and to act bigger." That line sounded like a politician, not a king.

After about 30 minutes, the speech's boffo ending got huge applause: "The True North is indeed strong and free." Yay!

The TV talking heads suggested that Charles gave Trump nothing "to latch onto" and whine about. Perhaps not, but you can bet he's already fuming. Donald is very jealous of the pomp and prestige that accompany foreign royalty. It's all part of his need to win the acceptance he thinks he's been denied from anybody he sees as having higher status or clout — whether they're kings, the Manhattan elite, the Ivy League, popes, or just his dear old dad. It's pitiful and fruitless. We cats PURR.

*(Donald would have said the throne in Ottawa didn't have enough gold on it. Have you seen what he's done to the Oval Office lately?)
