On this date in 2020, New York State had its first diagnosed case of coronavirus. As they say, "It seems like only yesterday..." But in that short year, the Benedict Donald Administration self-destructed, Joe Biden won the Presidency, and the Capitol was ransacked for the first time since 1814. And of course let's not forget that half a million Americans lost their lives.
It's an evening for reflection. So here are a few of our thoughts.
Today, Governor Andrew Cuomo finds himself under siege. That's a switch! But his high-flying approval ratings in the first months of the pandemic were, we suspect, an illusion. Andrew is one of those rare politicians who manages to win elections without engendering a lot of warm feelings. To wit: One of the reasons the Randy Rainbow "Andy" parody was so funny was because it was a love letter to a man nobody loves. (It's worth revisiting. See above.)
But we're not quite ready to give up on Andrew yet. The nursing home controversy seems like a kerfuffle about how to count people — and we have yet to understand how the alleged harassment incidents compare with a rape in Bergdorf dressing room. But we understand: Democrats tend to hold their own accountable (hello, Al Franken), while Republicans don't. We're glad that Tish James is handling the investigation. We singled her out in the New York AG Democratic primary in 2018, and we haven't been disappointed yet. We cats PURR.
