Reflections On The Roosevelts

By Miss Kubelik

He was the most important President of the 20th century — maybe of all time. And she was one of the most admired American women ever. But Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt as parents? Um, not so great.

How do we know? Well, you could point to the 19 marriages that the five Roosevelt children tallied up over their lives.

But here's better proof: John Roosevelt became a Republican in 1952. James Roosevelt joined Democrats for Nixon.

FDR would not have been dee-lighted. We cats HISS.

Did you by chance see the recent 14 hour series on PBS about the Roosevelts? It was rather fascinating and explored both the Republican (Oyster Bay) side of the family and the Democratic half from Hyde Park. Eleanor was, by dint of marrying Franklin, a kind of bridge between the two.

Yes, we cats rearranged our entire week's schedule to watch all 14 hours. We haven't allowed Ken Burns to run our lives like that since the original broadcast of "The Civil War." While we thought Ken's latest offering had some flaws, as devoted Democrats, we found the subject matter irresistible.
