Guess Who's Coming

By Zamboni

We cats just love classic film. In fact, we remember — or, more accurately, our owners remember — seeing Stanley Kramer's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner back in 1967. It was the first time we'd ever been exposed to Spencer Tracy (who had died before the film's release), and it was, to say the least, a revelatory experience.

We've been thinking of that movie in the last few days — and, in particular, one line spoken by Sidney Poitier.

Mr. Poitier's character, who's engaged to Spencer Tracy's daughter Johanna, is discussing his fiancee's potentially naive optimism of the world in which their mixed-race children will be born. "Well, you made her, Mr. Drayton," Poitier's character says to Tracy's. "I just met her in Hawaii."

It makes us think of Senator Obama — and not just because he was born in Hawaii.

You made these problems, Republicans. I'm just here to try to clean them up.

What's holding Senator Obama from this goal? The entrenched influences in Washington, sure — and the Karl Rove acolytes who will NOT allow power to be wrested from their greasy little hands without a fight.

But we cats have reason to hope.

We think that maybe — just maybe — the media are pissed off. We wonder if it's not possible that the McCain campaign has crossed the line in abusing the press.

We may be too optimistic, but we think the McCainiacs are finally going to start paying a price for it.

Not everywhere. But the list now includes — at least — NBC, CBS, The New York Times, TIME magazine, The Washington Post, and Newsweek.

While not everyone reads them, they do set the agenda for everyone else.

You created these problems, Republicans. Senator Obama is just here trying to clean them up. Is it possible that the so-called "liberal" media could point that out, at long last?

We cats wait. Until then, please spread the word. McCain-Palin doesn't have all the answers. In fact, they don't even have one.
