Big Surprise (NOT): Gender Doesn't Matter

By Baxter

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll out today shows that it's party identification and political beliefs that determine voters' reactions to the Sarah Palin V.P. selection — not the Governor's gender.

Said one poll participant, a supporter of Senator Clinton: "I'm not going to vote for McCain just because he picked a woman. Her values are polar opposite of mine."

This doesn't surprise us cats — despite the brief flurry of media attention that female Clinton supporters might be swayed. We're talking about a hair-trigger decision made by a Presidential candidate who, we firmly believe, must have seen some pretty disastrous internal poll numbers — convincing him that he had to do something drastic or lose in a landslide.

But we'll tell you one area where we think gender does matter: respect. Women won't like it when they hear this John McCain "joke" from a few years back: "Do you know why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father."

In the words of The Montreal Gazette: "The cruelty to three women (including Hillary) speaks volumes."
